Tutoring in Torrance, CA.

As a parent, you may be surprised by how many skills you can teach your child at a young age without even realizing.  In this post, The Tutoring Center in Torrance will give you some ideas on how you can give your child basic math help to complement their school work.

Start small

Basic math and quantity calculations are great skills that your children will use during their early school years.  But you don’t need to wait for them to learn these skills at school, or even limit their exposure to them solely in a classroom environment.

While making a shopping list and balancing the items in your pantry may come as second nature to you, there are fundamental skills within this task that your child can benefit from at an early age and utilize alongside their tutoring.

Get your kids involved in making your next shopping list. From counting the items in your pantry, to calculating the quantities of everything you will need for your shopping list, keeping your kids’ brains active and exposed to basic math when they aren’t at school can give them the advantage they need.  And the best part - the kids don’t realize they’re learning!

Keep them involved

As your children grow older, or if you have older children, you can expand this task to stimulate new skills.  For example, start by asking your children to plan a shopping list and budget for a weekend without any help.  Give them specific requirements, such as accounting for what items are already in the pantry, special offers, bulk savings, and even frozen storage requirements. When they come back with the list, build it into your regular shopping. If they can see their calculating and planning work in action, it will give them confidence to take on more of the challenge in the future.

It is important for parents to teach their child as much as they can, and tasks like these are a great way for parents to be involved in their child’s education without limiting that involvement to school.  To complement these basic fundamental skills, our experts can provide reading, writing, and math help through one-to-one instruction or private tutoring in Torrance.
