With your child's return to school, you may notice they're struggling to get back in the groove of things. To make this easier for them, help them create easy to follow school time routines.

School Routines to Make This Year Easier

After a long summer break, getting back into the groove of the academic year can prove to be a challenge for many students. If your child is having a tough time adjusting, use these tips to establish some useful school time routines that can get them back on the right track.

Establish a Morning Routine

Mornings before school can be tough for everyone involved. Luckily, you can make it all easier and more efficient by creating a morning routine for your child. This can simplify everything they need to do before heading out the door. Start by establishing a wake-up time for your child so that they get used to getting up at the same time daily. Once they're up, they should continue their routine by taking care of the same things every morning. They may start by heading to the bathroom to wash their face, brush their teeth, and do their hair or they may head out to the kitchen for breakfast first. Whatever they choose to do, just make sure they do it the same every morning. Finally, have your child get dressed and grab their backpack before heading out the door. To make this even easier, have your child pick out their outfit the night before so that they don't waste time in the morning trying to decide what to wear. They should also pack their backpack and lunchbox the night before so that they aren't running around looking for their homework in the morning. All of this may seem simple but it can really cut down on the chaos and stress of mornings before school. Create an After School Routine

After a long school day, your child may not want to do their homework, but they really have no other option. To make this easier and to help them get it done more efficiently so that they have time for fun activities, create an after school routine. Start by creating a positive atmosphere at home. Greet your child with a smile and ask about their school day. Ask them about the things that went well, what they learned, and about the fun parts of their day. If your child needs to recharge a bit before starting their homework, allow them to do this but in a productive way. Instead of letting them zone out in front of the television, prepare a healthy snack to help them refuel and, if needed, have your child take a quick nap. A 15-minute nap can help them get some of their energy back so that they're ready to tackle their homework. Don't let their nap extend beyond 15 minutes because it will be harder for them to get up and get to work. Finally, have them start their homework at the same time every day. This will help them get used to this routine and they'll eventually start doing it without even thinking about it. Before they jump into their first assignment, have them create a to-do list where they can keep track of all of their assignments. They can also check these off as they complete them so that they can see their progress and stay motivated.

Make a Bedtime Routine

Once the day is coming to an end, a bedtime routine will help your child fall asleep on time every night. Getting the right amount of rest can help your child be more efficient in the morning and will ensure they're able to focus at school the next day. Before getting to bed, have your child pack their backpack and lunchbox. They should also pick out their outfit for the next day. After this, have your child practice relaxing activities that will help their body wind down and get ready for rest. Reading in bed or taking a warm back can help signal that it's time to get to sleep. Remember to keep gadgets out of reach until the next day since these can emit a blue light that makes it harder to fall asleep and get a restful night of sleep. This means no tablets, cellphones, and laptops in bed. Finally, have your child turn off their light and go to bed at the same time every night. Their body will grow accustomed to this routine, making it easier to fall asleep at the same time every night.
